چکیده

The cover time is the expected time it takes a simple random walk to cover all vertices of a graph. It arises in numerous questions related to the behaviour of random walks on graphs. Despite the fact that it can be approximated with arbitrary precision by a simple polynomial time Monte-Carlo algorithm which simulates the random walk, it is not known whether the cover time of a graph can be computed in determin-istic PTIME. In the present paper we establish a deterministic polynomial time algorithm that for any graph and any starting vertex approximates the cover time within polylogarithmic factors. More generally, our algorithm approximates the cover time for arbitrary reversible Markov chains.

A Local 2-Approximation Algorithm for the Vertex Cover Problem

We present a distributed 2-approximation algorithm for the minimum vertex cover problem. The algorithm is deterministic, and it runs in (∆+ 1) synchronous communication rounds, where ∆ is the maximum degree of the graph. For ∆ = 3, we give a 2-approximation algorithm also for the weighted version of the problem.

1 2 O ct 2 00 6 Approximation Algorithms for Multi - criteria Traveling Salesman Problems ∗

In multi-criteria optimization problems, several objective functions have to be optimized. Since the different objective functions are usually in conflict with each other, one cannot consider only one particular solution as the optimal solution. Instead, the aim is to compute a so-called Pareto curve of solutions. Since Pareto curves cannot be computed efficiently in general, we have to be cont...

Deterministic approximation for the cover time of trees

We present a deterministic algorithm that given a tree T with n vertices, a starting vertex v and a slackness parameter ǫ > 0, estimates within an additive error of ǫ the cover and return time, namely, the expected time it takes a simple random walk that starts at v to visit all vertices of T and return to v. The running time of our algorithm is polynomial in n/ǫ, and hence remains polynomial i...

Spatiotemporal Variations of Total Cloud Cover and Cloud Optical Thickness in Iran

A knowledge of cloud properties and spatiotemporal variations of clouds is especially crucial to understand the radiative forcing of climate. This research aims to study cloudiness in Iran using the most recent satellite data, powerful databases, and regional and seasonal analyses. In this study, three data series were used for the spatiotemporal variations of cloudiness in the country: A) Clou...

The Inapproximability of Non NP-hard Optimization Problems

The inapproximability of non NP-hard optimization problems is investigated. Techniques are given to show that problems Log Dominating Set and Log Hypergraph Vertex Cover cannot be approximated to a constant ratio in polynomial time unless the corresponding NP-hard versions are also approximable in deterministic subexponential time. A direct connection is established between non NP-hard problems...
